Kinja'd!!!

For 2019, what are the vehicles that are on your current “you know, I might actually buy one of these next year” list.

The current line up at ye ol’ ULY Garage of Dreams is of a strategic variety.

SUV: 2005 Volvo XC90 (2.5L 5cyl Turbo)

Coupe: 2005 BMW Z4 (2.5L I6)

Sedan: 1995 Toyota Camry (2.2L 4cyl)

Want list for 2018 is a pick up truck, classic car and a large luxury saloon car. To add to that, I want to be from different nations. Sweden, Germany and Japan are already taken.

At the moment, these 2 fit the 3 catagories.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

These are prime examples but they are usually available in various conditions locally. It would be rad to acquire at least one of these next year. Difficult, but not impossible. I like those odds haha.

How about you?

Yellow NA Miata in as close to mint condition as possible. I want to keep it stock, or Maaaaaybe an OEM+ build.

There are a lot of other possibilities but that's the top. My two car garage is pretty good right now

Also probably a VAM Lerma, just because I want to be that  annoying  person at C&C.

I really think a Fiesta ST fun/sunny day car would be complimented by a JK 2 door. I could have had one, but would have had to sell my ST. I bought the Kia instead but will eventually get a Jeep by trading in the Forte.

My list is just another Miata! My 2001 has developed a rod knock that is not fixable without an engine rebuild. I may rebuild the engine but it sure as hell isn’t going back in that junker of a chassis. The plan is part out and keep the good bits like my roll bar, LSD, harness, wheels, and seat. Then I’ll pick up another NB Miata in 2019. Just started a new savings account that I titled “Miata replacement” and opened it with a $500 deposit. Should be able to have a few grand by summer time.

Goal is to find a 2002-2005 NB2 with good paint and sub 150k miles and running well.

Also, define “a little work.” Leave no detail out. I worked on these when new so I know all the foibles (including the brake consumption.)

I’ve also become increasingly interested in vehicles running on natural gas. I’d like to replace my current beater with one of those. Easy choice would be a Bi-Fuel V70.

It has the two tone khaki leather interior.

Mine isn’t pristine underneath, it has a little surface rust in some parts. Nothing that would cause problems before it would need a new engine anyway though.

Right now it has what I think is a valve cover leak that has dripped onto one of the o2 sensors so the CEL is on with a P0158 code . I recently put new cats in it though so I know it’s not actually the cats that’s causing the light. The rain sensor has come off the windscreen a little so i have to use the manual mode for the wipers until I can get it put back on.

All in all, it’s in decent shape and I’ve done all the maintenance it’s ever needed , but a pristine one with half the miles will be more reliable. I’m not going to pretend that it wouldn’t be, it is a DaimlerChrysler product after all.

I’m in Jersey by the way.

At this point I’m kind of ambivalent between an E550 4matic sedan or an E500 Wagon. A wagon would be nice, but an E550 would be post refresh and probably a bit more reliable. Plus, a sedan is perfectly adequate for 99% of what I do, especially a big one with rear seats that can be folded down.

I’m going to get a PPI done on the ‘08 and I’ll probably buy it if it checks out well and the price is right. Otherwise, I’ll keep looking. I’d also consider an Infiniti M45x or an FX45, but those have been difficult to find at the right price.

Hnnnnnnngh, this one?

Kinja'd!!!

Damnit, you’re making this somewhat hard. The problem is that you do have a valve cover leak (it’s a common issue, easy fix.) But the oil doesn’t cause P0158. That’s O2 downstream fault. On the ‘05 you need to put it on the monitor and check the graph. Either it’s the easy thing (bad O2 sensor, it’s best to do D/S and U/S in pairs) or it’s the really bad thing (PWM fluctuation failure mode in the PCM.) Really the biggest problem is getting the O2 sensors out though. Cheater bar ain’t optional. Probably it’s just the sensor - especially with new cats since bad cats will mask bad sensors - but as I said, gotta do both.

And honestly, the 5.7/545RFE/NV240 WK’s? Anyone who says they aren’t reliable is just wrong. Case in point, yours. 200k and it’s all minor shit. Doesn’t even have the electrical hell . We’d have 3.7/4.7's come in below 30k needing a whole new engine, PCM number three, BCM and interior harness, complete IPC, you name it . Regularly. The 5.7's? So long as you changed the oil and transmission on schedule and didn’t leave ‘em with dirty air filters, the worst you’d see on those was the valve cover leak and devouring brakes thanks to shitty OE rotors .

That’s why I’m looking only at 5.7's. To save money, the 5.7/5.9 Hemi is quite literally a fully matured LA block on new tooling (cheapest way to set it up in Mexico) with newly designed heads. The 5.7 is a 3.917 x 3.578, vs the LA 360 (5.9) of 4.0 x 3.58 and the Magnum (Upgraded LA) 4.0 x 3.58. In fact, all 5.7/6.1/6.2 Hemis (including Hellcat) are direct descendants. (Which makes the failure rate of the 6.1/6.2 all the more embarrassing.)

Location is not an issue for me - I have my methods! Tell you what... you want to give me your email or do you want me to give you mine?

Oh-ho! Give your mechanic the heads up from a seriously old hand that he needs to double-check what manufacturer for the downstream and upstream. They can’t be the same . Different elements for upstream and downstream on these. Use the wrong part, get a premature failure and a code. This catches a TON of people out. And yes, they almost al ways ship the wrong goddamn part.

“Want List” changes from day to day but the current obsession is a salvage-title Dodge Viper for as cheap as possible.

Why? I like consistent volumetric efficiency.

I’m a big fan of naturally aspirated engines with about 6o hp per liter; my MR2 makes 130 hp out of 2.2 liters and a 2nd gen Viper is 500 hp out of 8.3 liters.

I know most enthusiasts want a high-revving, high output NA motor but I’m actually really happy with the opposite. Don’t @ me, 6200+ RPM fans!

So my automotive wish list is:

Fix a “small leak” evaporation emissions issue (have to get a smoke test done). Not urgent.

Install a light for the cargo area as my Suzuki is a base model that didn’t have a cargo area light.

Maybe new windshield wipers

Replace some burnt out lights for the HVAC controls

Maybe buy moon disk wheel covers. Apparently they can help fuel economy by 2-5%. And I like how they look.

One new purchase I might make is a new bicycle.

In 2019, I’ll be keeping the C5, but hopefully adding a supercharger to it.

I’ll probably sell the Cube and pick up a new (pre-owned) daily driver. The current front-runners are:

Alfa Romeo Giulia. I absolutely love the looks of it , but I’m not 100% sold on the reliability, which should probably count for more since it would be a daily.

Kia Stinger GT . Wish I could get it with a manual, but it’s certainly not a deal-breaker. Either way, a good car.

VW Golf R. Even though I swore off VAG products almost 8 years ago , it would still be a fun way to commute while still being reasonably practical.

Ford Fiesta ST. If I decide I’d rather just save a bunch of money buying something that I’ll realistically be putting lots of miles onto.

Chevy SS. As long as I could  find a clean and well-kept 6MT locally...

Will probably end up owning before Spring:

- Another smart.

- A second scooter (should I decide to sell the Chuckus).

Could reasonably buy:

- H onda Interceptor 500.

Could buy if I put my mind to it:

- Honda CB X.

Still working on getting my first car, I’m looking at (manual) Civics 8th gen and up, maybe even a new Si (there’s incentives and stuff that work out as well as the fact that im in a Honda family and we have our ways), Kia Forte5 SX, Kia Forte Koup SX, Dodge Dart GT or SXT (dont ask), Ford Focus/ST, Miatas, Corollas (maybe also a new hatch because i have connections and methods and incentives), Honda Fits and a few more i cant remember rn because my brain’s toasted

If I'm to buy something, it'll be a small truck. Odds of it happening? Slim to none.

Oh, I’ll do that for you... but it’d be cheaper to buy another Evo.

I plan on keeping you two cars but making major improvements/restorations. Currently about to do vanos, front control arms and such, alcantara headliner, m3 wheels with new summer tires when winter goes away, and then some nice coilovers in the spring. This is all for my clownshoe.  The e34 also has a lot of plans for it lol

It certainly won’t be next year, since I just got the BRZ (thanks again!) , but the next “attainable” car that’s tugging at my wallet is one of these :

Ya okay I can see that, I’d prefer to drive that too.

With this though the awesomeness of this idea is inversely proportional to the distance traveled; The ice cream shop across town - Meh. Ten minute walk - Okay. Just scoot across the street - Yes. Ride the Ruckus from the couch to the freezer - Winning!

Realistic? A 1990 VW Golf II. I’ll sell the 4Runner to buy it, and use the leftover cash to make some fixes/improvements to the Passat.

Almost realistic? A Mitsubishi Delica, but I don't see myself having that much extra cash to burn...

And the “not gonna happen” list: replace the 4Runner an d Passat with a 200 Series LC an d a Golf R, respectively. And add a Bentley or two for ballin’ on the weekends. And motorbikes.

My automotive goals list for next year are  as follows:

-get my Corolla drift project back in my hands, it’s been stagnant for too long and the shop owner is ghosting me

-replace my current daily driver with either a Honda Fit or Mazda 3 hatch from the 2009-2013 range.
